Couldn't we all use a little more storage space?

When Ben and I were first married, we had the joy of moving into our first apartment.  With our wedding gifts in tow, we began the delightful task of finding a spot for everything.  Despite the seemingly substantial amount of space in our kitchen, we ran out rather quickly.  However, this gave me the opportunity to display one of our favorite gifts, our beautiful copper plated pot and pan set.

We don't have the space for a pot rack, so I needed to come up with something for the wall instead.  Ben and I set off to Home Depot to find something suitable where we bought some peg board and hooks.  We had the board cut there, cut 2 holes in the middle for the light switches and secured it into the wall. Voilá, a homemade pot rack.

Today, I wanted to introduce some color to my kitchen and decided to do it by painting my pot rack.  I had a bunch of leftover paint from my previous chair project, and I don't like to let things go to waste, so it had been decided, my wall was going green - pun intended.  Side note: If you decide to make your own pot rack, I would suggest painting it before hanging it to avoid any paint getting caught in the peg holes and dripping.  I decided to paint it on the wall since my normal painting spot outside was being overrun with snow. Got to love spring in Ohio! 

I'm pretty happy with the final product.  The green compliments the copper well and gave me my color fix for the day, not to mention that it has a bit of vintage appeal, which is always a plus in my book.

Yay!  Isn't paint wonderful?!  On another note, you may be interested in the fact that my sewing machine and I are no longer in a fight.  In fact, I finally hemmed a pair of pants last night that have been waiting to be worn since last July.  Hooray for productivity and working machines!

A new addition, and full time distraction

I have not written in a few days.  I had planned on doing a post about the aforementioned kitchen chairs, but had a surprise arrival on Tuesday that has kept me pretty busy since then.  Readers, meet Gus, my adorable new puppy.

As of last Tuesday, Ben and I have been married for 5 months.  We both have a love for dogs that we have been resisting for about 4 1/2 of those 5 months. What can I say, when you're a dog person, you just are.  Needless to say, my attention has been elsewhere - playing with my puppy, snuggling with my puppy, introducing him to scary unknowns like riding in cars and playing with other (much bigger) dogs, not to mention the sometimes frustrating task of potty training.

Despite my distracted excitement over Gus, I am itching to get some projects done.  I've had a few sewing projects brewing in my mind for the past couple weeks.  Of course, my sewing machine and I haven't quite made up from the fight we had about a week ago.  I also have a gift I've been working on and can't wait to share with you once that gift has been given.

Starting tonight there will be a little less of this...

... and a little more productivity.  Don't get me wrong, I'm getting a little better at resisting the cuteness.  Today I made cookies and deviled eggs.  Not to be eaten together of course, but it is a step in the right direction.

Color and I are in lust

I have a new obsession.  I have fallen in lust with color (love is reserved for my Benjamin of course).  Anyone that knows me is probably a tad shocked judging by the neutrals my closet is filled with and my (now fading) obsession with achromatic housewares distinguished primarily by their textures.  I am certain that my husband has tired of hearing me say "texture, texture, texture" in our pursuit to decorate our new home.

At first, I wasn't too keen on the idea of the 70's coming back around in the fashion world.  I'm still at the point where I refuse to adapt into a pair of bell bottoms, but the color is fun.  The new bold color combinations are exciting, and I'm finding out that I actually look good in color.  I wore a royal blue maxi skirt today, way out of my comfort zone, and received enough compliments on my outfit to become an avid color advocate.

My current favorite combination was inspired by a vase we have at anthro.  A minty green body with a bright coral flower protruding from its peak.  As it turns out, we also have my favorite bowls in these refreshing spring shades.

Is it bad to have bowls for winter and bowls for spring?  I was so excited about this color union that my last project (which I will be posting about soon) consisted of applying those colors to my dining room chairs.  It also appeared, in a slightly altered version, on the fitting room mannequin today (not so mysteriously), in the following ensemble:

 

I'm smitten by this cardigan with its 1950's scalloped neck and turquoise color.  The skirt pulls in that beautiful burnt orange coral color and the belt acts as its fresh minty accent.  I tucked the cardigan into the skirt, wrapped the belt around, and contrasted the neck of the sweater with this crescent shaped necklace.  I also dressed one of my clients in this outfit today.  She looked adorable.  All of these items can be found at your nearest Anthropologie or anthropologie.com.

So it begins...

I have been toying with the idea of starting a blog for some time now.  Something to document my projects and hopefully inspire others, including myself.  I have been in a creative funk since the winter months began, and as the weather changes for the positive, I am beginning to see my funk dissipate.

I do not claim to be a writer, or even an artist for that matter.  I am simply someone who enjoys creating things that are aesthetically pleasing, and want to share my journey's.  I was never even a blog viewer until I got engaged and found myself addicted to scouring wedding blogs in desperation to make my day perfect.  Now, five months after marriage, I have not kicked the addiction but have a different goal in mind.  I want to make a home with my husband, and I want to do that without forgetting the things I loved to do before marriage.

Within the pages of my blog, I hope you will find inspiration to try new things.  Most of the projects I attempt, I have had no experience prior.  I tend to jump into things regardless of the possibility of failure, and I will probably share my "flops" with you as well.  I don't want to limit myself to one topic because my interests seem to be ever-growing.  My current plan is to share craft projects, recipes, home improvements, things I'm learning as a newly-wed, and my take on fashion with unlimited possibilities for more.  I look forward to sharing my journey with whomever wants to join me.
